"Fiddler on the Roof is often cited as the last of the great Broadway musicals in a golden era stretching back to Oklahoma! in 1943. But it also marked a transition in the Broadway musical, taking as its very subject the erosion of tradition in the face of social change, which was something that was going on outside the theater in the 1960s. Despite such universal implications, it was also a specific, ethnic story, and its focus on Jewish life made some doubt it could succeed with mass audiences. Instead, after its opening on September 22, 1964, it played 3,242 performances, making it the longest running Broadway musical up to its time. A large part of its appeal was captured on this cast album, with Zero Mostel as the turn-of-the-century Russian milkman Tevye with five daughters. Mostel's humor helped leaven the sadder aspects of the story; his performance of "If I Were a Rich Man" made it into a joyous standard...the cast album sold in the millions. A young Julia Migenes made a strong impression as one of the daughters, and the rest of the cast was adequate.
