Pianisten och sångaren Rosco Gordon (1928-2002) sådde fröet till ska och reggae med sina 50-talsinspelningar (gjorda bl a i Sun-studion i Memphis), som via radiostationer i amerikanska södern nådde till Jamaica. Där tog unga musiker upp Gordons säregna skuttiga backbeat och utvecklade sin egen musik.
