"Cannonball Adderley's finest group (his sextet with cornetist Nat Adderley, Yusef Lateef on tenor, flute and oboe, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes) is heard at the peak of their powers on this two-LP set. The first half was previously released as Nippon Soul while the second LP was only issued for the first time in 1975. After a period of stable personnel (all but Zawinul and Lateef had been in the band since 1959), these musicians were very familiar with each other's playing and they had grown together. The enthusiastic Japanese crowds inspired the all-star band to some of their most rewarding playing, which can be heard on such standouts as "Nippon Soul," "Come Sunday," "Work Song," "Dizzy's Business" and "Jive Samba" among others. It's a definitive portrait of a classic group." (Scott Yanow, allmusic.com)
