At the Onyx Club

Newton, Frankie

Beskrivning:

"The lyrical trumpeter Frankie Newton offered a contrast to the blazing solos of Roy Eldridge. Newton could play high notes but much of the time he was more interested in expressing himself gently and with intelligent subtlety. This LP contains eight selections from recording sessions led by Newton (these have since been reissued on a Classics CD) and some of his backup work with singers Maxine Sullivan and Midge Williams when he was associated with John Kirby's early group. There are a few inferior vocals on Newton's own recordings but also such fine performances as "Who's Sorry Now," "Frankie's Jump" and "Jam Fever;" altoists Pete Brown and Tab Smith (on different dates) are the most memorable of Newton's sidemen. Other highpoints of these swing dates include Maxine Sullivan's "Loch Lomond" (a major hit) and Midge Williams's version of "The Lady Is a Tramp"." (Scott Yanow, allmusic.com)
